My husband and I were PC trainees in Bangladesh 8 years ago. I completely got this post. We pulled the plug on our PC career early on in training, mainly due to our (or rather, my) inability to cope with many of the scenarios you outlined. I know it was the right call at the time, but I will always regret not being able to just suck it up and cope. Anyway, just wanted to let you know I appreciated you sharing your thoughts.

don't worry about it :) the focal length is enough, that 80-300 is huge, no?! i have an 80-200 (granted it's 30 years old) but it's a beast and i would be terrified to bring it! have a safe trip tomorrow and enjoy your immersion!

I'm writing this in Philadelphia as we just finished Staging. We jet tomorrow from JFK for Rwanda! I'll be sure to let you know how well have the Nikon D50 works. I have the stock lends for the D50, as well as a nikkor 80-300mm telephoto. I'd get you the actual model numbers, but they're all packed away right now. Hope your PC experience will be grand as well!

I got your comment on my blog. I thought we were put off until the last minute when we rec'd our invitation around Aug 10th or so, they really put you off until the last minute. I look forward to meeting you at staging. I am into hiking and trekking too, sounds like there will be lots to be had of this in Rwanda. We'll keep in touch and compare packing lists just in case you think of something that I haven't. Send me an email and I can forward you an email I got from a current PCV in Rwanda about what to bring.
